A smoking ceremony is an ancient aboriginal custom in Australia that involves the burning of native plants to produce smoke. In Aboriginal culture, this smoke is known to be cleansing and has the ability to ward off bad spirits. The smoke travels up to the milky way (sky) to our ancestors letting them know we are here and asking them to keep us safe. When you see a smoking ceremony happening, you will notice people standing in the line of the smoke to ensure the smoke touches their skin and 'cleanses' them and keeps them safe. Sometimes you will see people 'washing' themselves with the smoke to ensure it touches their whole body including their feet, to keep them on a safe path.
